Sunday May 1, 2011: Mrs. Deborah J. Wilkins

Mrs. Wilkins Pic

I have been an AKC judge since 2001.  I am approved to judge Bernese Mountain Dogs, Alaskan Malamutes, Newfoundlands, Portuguese Water Dogs, Boxers, Great Danes, Rottweiler, Australian Shepherds and All Breed Junior Showmanship. I am presently completing my AKC provisional assignments for Akita, Bullmastiff, Doberman Pinscher, Great Pyrenees, Mastiff, Samoyed, and Siberian Huskies.

My passion for purebred dogs has been life long.  In the early 1970’s, I had a good friend that raised, trained, and showed Doberman Pinschers.  She introduced me to the dog show world and became my first mentor, teaching me the importance of obedience training, responsible pet ownership and responsible breeding practices.  She entrusted me with a lovely young male dog.  Ownership of this Doberman Pinscher taught me the importance of breed type, temperament, and structure which are still of primary importance to me today.  Over the years I have shared my life with Great Danes, Standard Dachshunds, German Shorthair Pointers, Afghan Hounds, Italian Spinoni, Shiba Inu, Papillion, Border Terriers, and Bernese Mountain Dogs.

I adopted my first Bernese AKC/CKC CH. Gruezi Dear Abbey AKC/CKC CD CGC in January, 1989.
Abby was the foundation of Abbey Road Bernese Mountain Dogs and a BMDCA Top Producer of conformation and obedience champions.  Three years later Abby produced our first litter and homebred champion AKC/CKC CH. Abbey Rd Here Comes the Sun AKC/CKC CD CGC.  Sunny won multiple group wins and placements, Best of Breed at Westminster, Canadian Best in Show, plus multiple BMDCA Awards of Merit, and was a Top Ten dog in both the USA and Canada.  He is also a BMDCA Top Producer of Champions.

My limited breeding program under the AKC registered Abbey Road Kennel prefix has produced several BMDCA Top Producers, over 50 championship titles, over 25 obedience title holders, and drafting titles.  Most of these titles have been earned by me, my husband, and my daughter.  I have consistently won awards at BMDCA National Specialties including multiple Awards of Merit over the last fifteen years.  I had the honor of judging at the 2010 BMDCA National Specialty.

While my passion is Bernese Mountain Dogs, I remain a student of all breeds.  Type, Temperament, and Soundness are what I look for in all breeds of dogs.  I look for purpose in the breed and choose examples of breed type that will fulfill that purpose.

I am honored to judge the Siberian Husky Club of Middle Tennessee Regional Specialty.
